A New Record Moose

Real's mooseWe may have a new world record moose killed in the Yukon.  I have heard about record book animals being killed, but never knew if it was true or not.  One of the reasons that I started this web page was to get accurate information and give you all the details that are available.  In addition I wanted to be able to edit out the claims that are simply not true.  You would be surprised how many people claim that they have killed a world class deer only to find out that while it is a nice deer, it is not a world class deer.

I received a phone call from a visitor to the web page.  His name is Sylvain Trudel  from L’Homme Panache, Inc. He and Real Langlois produce the Rack Man Video series.  Sylvain had called to tell me that Real may have killed a record setting moose with a bow and arrow.  I contacted Real and Sylvain on the phone to interview Real about his moose. This was the hardest interview that I have ever done.  Real Langlois is a French Canadian.  He does speak English but not well enough for me to get the information needed for this article.  I don’t speak French at all despite all the French classes I took in high school.  We were in luck because Sylvain was able to translate for both of us.

Real Langlois is a 48 year old French Canadian and has made the claim that he MAY have killed the new world record moose with a bow.  Real is the first one to say that we have to wait until the six month drying period to know for sure whether this is a new world record or not. Real is also called the Rack Man.  He has been guiding for moose for the past 10 years.  He has been involved in moose hunting since his father took him hunting at the age of 9.  He has been video taping his and his clients hunts for years.  This man knows what a world class moose looks like.

Real’s Canadian moose green scored 76.5 inches and 249 5/8 PY.  The present Pope and Young club record for a Canadian moose is 222 1/8 PY shot by Charles Roy in Cap-Chat Quebec in 1988.(See photo to the right.) Real’s bull weighed 1560 pounds.  He was able to call this bull in by rattling and grunting.  The time between when he first saw the bull, and the time when he shot it, was five to six minutes.  Real is a Mathew’s pro shooter and shot the bull with a Conquest 70 pound bow.  He was using Carbon Express Maxima arrows and 100 g Rage broad heads.  The bull was eight feet away and standing broadside when Real shot the bull.

For any of you that have never been moose hunting, moose are very big animals. Moose are the biggest deer in North America.  It has a kill zone about three times the size of a white tail deer. The bulls loose all common sense when the rut kicks in.  This doesn’t mean that you can ignore the wind when hunting moose. A bull will run off when they smell humans.  Real used his moose calling skills and his specially made paddles to call in this moose.  As a guide he is known for his ability to serenade moose to come in to kill range.  Real has a series of videos available on the internet that give you a good idea of what is involved in moose hunting.  I will be doing a review of his last two videos in January.

In four months I will look forward to reporting the results of the official scoring.  It is hard to tell how much the antlers will shrink in the next four months.  I would also like point out that there is always a lot of criticism when a new world record is brought out.  There are always skeptics that will not believe that an animal was killed in a fair chase manner.  There have been instances where hunters have not gotten an animal scored because of all the scrutiny that was leveled against them

I wish Real good luck and hope that we have a new record moose.  Whether or not this is a world record this is still a great animal.

Congratulation Real,

Sean
