Parsons Outdoor Productions sent us a video “Thumbs Up and Whitetails Down” to take a look at. This is the kind of video that I like to see. I have seen many videos that are an hour and a half of commercials for different hunting products. This video is about a couple of guys who love hunting and have a good time.
When watching this video you can tell these
guys really enjoy hunting.
This video was made by two men, Tim Ward and Jon Parson.
These guys do all the work from hanging the tree stands to
filming the hunts. About
ten year’s ago, I worked with a friend and tried to do the same
thing. It is a lot of
hard work and can be very expensive.
I would compare Tim and Jon to Bushman Brook from Australia.
This video took two years to make and is a
little longer than two hours. It shows us 33 different hunts.
I was happily surprised by the high quality of the video.
This is the same quality that you would see in any commercial
video.
The hunts are mostly in Pennsylvania hardwood
country. While there are
some turkey, bear, and pheasant hunts the majority of the hunts are
of white tail deer.
There are a couple of clips of pheasant hunting with a recurved bow. They show the guys preparing for the hunt by shooting targets that are thrown up in the air. Then they show them hunting pheasants with the bow. There are scenes of the arrow hitting and killing the bird. This was very well done.
There are a few nice bucks killed on film, but most of the deer killed are does and button bucks. This is a fun video to watch. They were able to capture the reality of what bow hunting is. There are a couple of bad hits on deer and the video shows the extra steps taken to recover the deer.
This video would make a nice addition to any collection of hunting videos. I would have liked to seen more of the preparations for the hunt. I also didn’t like how some of the hunters asked the cameraman if “they got the shot”. Over all I would suggest this video to a hunter of any level.
