The Right Tool for the job!!!!!!
Having the right tool for a job can be the deciding factor in whether or not you can do a job. I know that everyone has had moment a when the say "O' Sh&* I forgot something". Having a bag to keep your gear in can be helpful. We are going to show you what you should have with you as you go hunting.
First,
this gear is used for hunting white tails in the northeastern part of the country. This is not
a complete list and there are always things that you may need that will
not be on this list. What you bring into the woods can make or break your hunt.
To start we are going to look at what you should carry in your back pack. The number one thing that is in my
backpack is my hunting
license and deer tags. Most hunters that are cited for hunting violations are
cited because they don't have their hunting license with them. The bag
should also have two flashlights, a GPS, a cell pone,
knife, binoculars, scents, pull-up rope, bow holder, saw, spare release, and
toilet paper.
The key to a good hunt is to be prepared. It seems like no matter how well you scout and how prepared you think you are, when you get out into the woods you always need something. There are many things that you can bring into the woods with you but why bring equipment that you don't need.
The following is a list of equipment that you will need in the woods as you hunt. The one thing that you will absolutely need is a hand saw. Keeping it in a side pocket of the pack makes it handy when you are climbing up the tree. No matter how many branches you cut down, it seems like they grow overnight. You will also need a bow holder of some kind once you get into the tree.
The next thing you'll need is scents. I'm
a very strong
believer in using scents. I have been using deer scents and HS
scents for years. I have killed many deer using both products. A disclaimer
is needed here because no scent will work all the time. There are times when the
deer will run right to the scent and other times the deer will run away
from it.
You can't talk about scents without talking about calls. They both are used to attract deer. I have been using calls for years with mixed results. This year I will be using a call by Extinguisher which I will be doing a review on. Mixing calls and scents can bring that deer in the last couple of yards. Calls are like scents. They work great sometimes and other times they can hurt your hunt
We can't talk about what to bring hunting
without talking about safety equipment. I would never go hunting without a
cell phone and leaving a note with where I will be. A cell phone will do two things.
You can call for help if you have a problem and you can also ask your friends for help dragging the big buck out of the woods.
There is always a need to carry some kind of small first aid kit. We carry very sharp blades on our arrows and a moment of carelessness can cause a
bad cut.
There is a need to carry spares of certain equipment. A must is to always carry a spare release. A release can be dropped in the dark without the hunter knowing. If your tree stand has pins or other small pieces that can be lost, you will need to carry spares of them. Having all of these things in a zip lock bag in your pack will save a lot of time and energy when you need the part.
A deer hunter will never go into the woods without his knife. I have two knives that I bring with me. The knife that I use to clean the deer I keep in my pack. The other I have in my pocket. The pocket knife is my utility knife. A pocket knife is useful for many things. If I ever fell from my tree stand, I could use it to cut the safety strap.
I would also suggest that everyone carry a half roll of toilet paper. It has many uses. You can mark blood trails and the great thing about toilet paper is that it breaks down fast in the woods. Toilet paper can be used to stop bleeding in case of an accident and can also help to clean yourself up after cleaning a deer.
When going into the woods always bring what you need and no more. I know many guys that have things in their bags that they have never used. You should go through your bag every week to make sure that you are only carrying necessary equipment.
Good Luck
